Unlike directives, guidelines aren’t legally binding. In other words, doctors don’t have to follow the recommendations if they don’t think they are suitable for certain patients. But deviations from guidelines must be justified.
For some medical conditions there are also easy-to-understand guidelines for patients. They are freely available on the internet. The German Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) offers an overview of the currently available guidelines for patients in Germany.
Clinical practice guidelines are systematically develop statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances.”(Institute of Medicine, 1990)
Issued by third-party organizations, and not NCCIH, these guidelines define the role of specific diagnostic and treatment modalities in the diagnosis and management of patients. The statements contain recommendations that are base on evidence from a rigorous systematic review and synthesis of the publish medical literature.
These guidelines are not fix protocols that must be follow, but are intend for health care professionals and providers to consider. While they identify and describe generally recommend courses of intervention, they are not present as a substitute for the advice of a physician or other knowledgeable health care professional or provider.
