Below is how the essay should be formated    THE TEMPLATE: When writing your responses to the short essay questions, you should keep four objectives in mind for each question:

First, you need to answer the question–preferably in the first sentence. As a trick, I suggest you try to use as much of the question in your first sentence as possible–apart from the question mark. I also suggest that you do not tell me that the question is not worth answering. You will get a chance to assess the significance of the question later in your essay. Second, you need to explain why your answer to the question is credible. This is your argument and it will be the primary focus for my assessment. You should introduce the argument in summary form in the first paragraph and then develop it in a more structured way in the paragraphs to follow. There are no “right” answers or “wrong” answers to the questions, but there are weak arguments and strong arguments in support of whatever answer you choose to posit. Much of my evaluation will reflect the strength of your argument.

Third, you need to explain the significance of your answer to our wider understanding of risk in international economics and politics.

By implication, you will also be explaining the significance of the question. We could argue that any of the questions are stupid. Your challenge is to make them look good. Fourth, you need to be specific. Make reference to some of the main lines of argument that you found most compelling in the readings. In other words, find a way to link what you say to what others have said.

If you can get it right, you may even want to mention specific authors by name. This is the major challenge in academic writing and in policy analysis. It is much harder to participate in an ongoing discussion than to talk to yourself. I expect you to identify where you fit in. On this point, you will find it is easier to join a conversation if you find a way to highlight. What others have said that is good than if you try to take on the world at once.
