When doing a research critique, it is acceptable to put the reference for the article on the bottom of the title page. Do not cite the article within the body of the paper. All other resources (such as the Polit and Beck textbook) must be cited and referenced as usual. I. Statement of the Problem: What problem/issue prompted the authors to do the study?. Is the problem clearly and concisely state?. Is the problem specific and narrow enough to study?.
Purpose of the Study What is the purpose of the study?. Are the key variables and population of interest include?. What are they? III. Research Question and Hypothesis Identify the research question. Are the key variables and population of interest include?.
If there is no research question, formulate one base on the purpose of the study. Define the terms dependent (DV) and independent variable (IV). Identify the DV(s) and IV(s) in the study. Hypothesis Define what a hypothesis is. Identify the hypothesis (if there is more than one, identify each) Is it state clearly?. Is it a null hypothesis or a researcher hypothesis?
IV. Review of Literature What is the purpose of a review of literature (ROL)? Is the ROL well-organize?. Does the ROL have a significant amount of recent work (less than five years old)?. Are the majority of references from scholarly journals?.
Does the ROL provide supporting evidence to show the need for carrying out the research?. (Was a gap in the literature identify)?. What is the purpose of using a theoretical or conceptual framework in nursing research?. Was a framework identified? If so, what is it? Is it adequately describe?.
