All of us have leadership potential that can be develop. According to Howard Gardner, the cognitive abilities of leaders—awareness of self and others, understanding dynamics of social settings, personal wants and goals—are all observable in five-year-olds! What talent aptitudes differentiate gifted leaders from others? Leaders have uncanny social and communication skills, or “personal and linguistic intelligences.” They take risks, are confident, seek power for self and others, and often feel, from a young age, a sense of destiny or being special.27 Innovators Become Leaders Regardless of talent domain, all innovators will likely become leaders, either directly or indirectly. Indirect leaders influence through their “disruptive innovations” and expertise in a particular domain.

1. Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
2. Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.
3. Manages delivery of the vision.
4. Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

Gardner explains that neither Albert Einstein nor Margaret Mead. This  sought to become leaders but became so through the innovative impact. They  they made in their fields. In contrast, direct leaders are “leaders by choice” who have a desire to effect change and seek to influence the broader community.
