This essay focuses on the context of engineering and design.we learned earlier, employers still do not find enough qualified STEM problem
Problem solving is widely accepted as an essential 21st-century skill. Simply defined, problem solving is “the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues.”15 We have known for more than a decade that we need to teach problem solving, particularly in the context of engineering and design, two themes with high priority on every nation’s agenda.16 We now have national standards for engineering practices; yet, as we learned earlier, employers still do not find enough qualified STEM problem solvers to fill the demand.
talent-targeted goals for problem solving. The crucial first step in problem solving is having students ask questions to define the problem to be solve. Albert Einstein once said, “If I were given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it.” There are various problem-solving models, such as creative problem solving (CPS) and the Wallas model (see Chapter 4). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) developed the BEST Engineering Design Model, which consists of six stages: ask, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve.17 Key elements across models include identifying problems, analyzing cause and effect, generating solutions, testing and verifying, and developing a plan of action.
These are the STEM disciplinary habits of mind that we want to develop in our students.. Clustering several aptitudes in a goal provides more opportunities for students to discover and develop their STEM aptitudes. To challenge students, write a cluster goal. Problem Solving Cluster Goal Students will use problem solving. This mathematical reasoning, and insight to conduct an experiment to determine which running shoe best reduces foot strike impact.
Students are engage by the novelty of measuring foot strike with an impact accelerometer. Answering the question of which shoe best reduces foot strike impact serves the meaningful purpose to potentially reduce running injuries.
